Brady Bacon – Just Missing Again with WoO at Haubstadt!

(Bill W) May 5, 2015 – For the second time in three years, Brady Bacon and his #99 team narrowly missed their first World of Outlaws win at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Indiana. In 2012, he had a commanding lead when a simple mechanical gremlin arose. On Sunday, it was a late double-file restart that cost him a win to Paul McMahan. Still, the second place finish was something solid to build on for the Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver. This Friday and Saturday, he will race not only with the Outlaws at Eldora Speedway near Rossburg, Ohio, but also in USAC National Sprint Car Series competition aboard the Hoffman Racing #69.

Last weekend saw Brady spending three nights with the WoO. Friday began in his home state at the Salina Highbanks Speedway. He was 20th quick in time trials. “It was kind of better to go out late, and we went out early,” he says. “Salina is a bigger track, and we haven’t quite got that big track qualifying down yet. The track was still a little dirty at the beginning.”

After getting to the main event through the B, he would lose a tire. “We were good in the B, and we were actually really good in the A,” says Brady, who started 19th. “We were up to around 13th at one time. I put a softer tire on to see what I could get out of it, and we blew it. We didn’t get the finish we wanted, but I felt really good about the car that night.”

Saturday, it was on to I-55 Raceway in Pevely, Missouri. “I don’t really know what happened in qualifying (timing in 22nd),” says Brady. “We went out late, and just didn’t have much speed. I thought we should have been a little better than that.”

The frustration continued for Brady. “We had a tire issue in the heat,” he says. “We blistered a tire. We were in a transfer spot for a while. We were good in the B. Steve (Kinser) got crossed up and spun out in one and two, and I had nowhere to go. It took our front end out and I couldn’t keep it straight. We took a DNF that night. Fortunately, Haubstadt saved our weekend!”

Things started on Sunday at Tri-State Speedway with a seventh quick qualifying effort. “I thought I could have been a little bit faster than that,” says Brady. “I spent the second lap on the bottom. I wanted to make sure I wouldn’t get beat down there. It’s happened there before.”

After making the Dash by going from inside row two to win his heat, he would come home in the runner-up spot. “We were really good in the heat race,” says Brady. “In the Dash, Joey (Saldana) got a good start on us and we finished second.”

Brady would lead at the outset of a thrilling feature. “The car was really fast,” he says. “Our best lap in the feature was four-tenths better than anyone else. We had that double-file restart towards the end. At Haubstadt, if anyone is close at all, they can slide you. My momentum was down a bit and Paul (McMahan) slid me there. I wasn’t able to get back to him.”

He had other company. “Joey started sliding me at that point,” says Brady. “It took me a few laps to get back up to speed. I was catching Paul again and I thought I had something for him. At that point, the yellow came out. That was a single-file restart with three to go. He got a good clean restart and I wasn’t able to get close enough to slide him.”

Brady was disappointed in just missing again. “Second was good, but we sure would have liked to have gotten that first Outlaw win out of the way!” he says. “We could use that extra money too.”

He is looking forward to running double duty on the high banks at Eldora Speedway. His last trip there resulted in a sprint car win at the USAC 4-Crown last September. “We’re always pretty good at Eldora without the wing,” says Brady. “We’ve made some changes. I have a different motor with my wing deal. I’m anxious to see how we stack up at a bigger track. I feel I have a better motor, so we’ll see.”
