Brady Bacon – Fast Florida Trip Ends at East Bay!

(Bill W) March 3, 2015 – Just like the week prior, some silly luck cost Brady Bacon and the Hoffman Racing #69 team from sweeping the weekend with top five runs. After a third place run on Friday with the USAC National Sprint Car Series at East Bay Raceway Park near Tampa, Florida, Brady was spun out by another competitor. He was able to come from the rear in the final five laps to register thirteenth and cap off a fast trip to Florida.

The Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver timed in ninth in Thursday’s preliminary at East Bay. “We weren’t that good qualifying Thursday,” he says. “It just so happened that it worked out for us though, and we started on the pole of the feature.”

Brady and the team made preparations for the main event. “The B feature was won on the top,” he says. “The fast laps were up top. We geared up for the top and the bottom ended up being faster. I lost the lead on the first lap to Kevin Thomas.”

Despite not having the best handling machine, he would hold onto a podium finish. “We got to lapped traffic, and I tried the middle to the top of one and two,” says Brady. “Dave (Darland) was able to get by me at that point. After that, we stayed in line and we were able to get third. We didn’t have that great of a car, but if I was on the bottom the whole race, we may have had a chance to win. Usually, I’m the one on the bottom.”

It was a satisfying finish considering everything. “It was good to get a podium finish,” says Brady. “We were pretty happy with third. Still, we made quite a few changes on the car for Friday night.”

Qualifying went better for Brady on Friday. “We were able to qualify fourth,” he says. “Chase (Stockon) was just on a roll down there qualifying. I think we were the only two that got quick times in Florida.”

He would come from sixth to second in his heat. Starting in row three, Brady quickly established himself as a favorite in the feature. “We were racing Robert Ballou and Kevin Thomas the whole race,” he says. “Ballou was able to get by KT, and then I was able to get by him into second. With five or six laps to go, Kevin ran through there and got into the back of us, spinning us out. I did a 360 and kept it going, but USAC rules say the caution has to come out and we had to go to the back. We definitely got the short end of the stick there.”

Brady would checker 13th, and looks back on Florida knowing the #69 was fast. “If it wasn’t for a couple nights where things were beyond our control, we would have had top fives every night,” he says. “I was pretty happy with the speed of the car, and hopefully, we can carry that momentum through the rest of the year.”

The next action for Brady will come on March 20 and 21 at the “Copper on Dirt” at USA Raceway in Tucson, Arizona.
