Brady Bacon – New Track Record at Terre Haute!
(Bill W) May 28, 2014 – Brady Bacon jumped into three different rides in four shows and showed speed in all of them over Memorial Day weekend. On Wednesday, he hopped in the Hoffman #69, driving it to a new track record in time trials, and third in the feature at the Tony Hulman Classic at the Terre Haute (IN) Action Track to stay atop the USAC point standings. Friday and Saturday, he recorded good runs with the wing on in All Star competition at Fremont (OH) Speedway in his own #99. On Monday, the weekend ended aboard the Fox Brothers #53 in World of Outlaws competition at Lawrenceburg, Indiana.
Brady scorched the track record at Terre Haute’s half-mile, recording a lap of 19.225 seconds, over two-tenths better than the second quick effort of Chase Stockon. “We were able to set a track record at Terre Haute,” he says. “It’s really cool to set a record at a place with the history that Terre Haute has. The night started out really strong.”
After blasting from sixth to second in his heat race aboard the Hoffman Racing #69, Brady lined up outside of row three for the feature. “We were really strong in the heat race,” he says. “Starting sixth in the feature…it got single-file around the top. That place is just hard to pass the track is on top. You put Dave Darland out front, and it’s going to be tough to beat him. We were able to get to third and had a shot at Kevin (Thomas Jr.) for second, we just couldn’t get by him.”
The third place finish kept him on top in the USAC National sprint car standings. He currently has a 29 point margin over Darland. “Obviously, we’re happy with our performance in the USAC deal,” says Brady. “We’ve been really good night in and night out. We’re looking forward to getting busy with that, and getting out to Pennsylvania next week.”
The Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver turned his sights to Fremont Speedway in Ohio aboard the Brady Bacon Racing #99 on Saturday and Sunday. “The local cars at Fremont are tough,” he says. “You add the All Stars to that and we had 35 cars. We’re getting a lot better.”
Saturday, Brady timed in tenth quick, before driving from fourth to second in his heat. He would start inside row four of the feature. “We’re getting a lot better at the slick tracks, and it was really slick on Saturday,” he says. “We ended up ninth, which I felt was pretty good. We got bottled up at the beginning of the race and held on for the rest, so I thought it was pretty good.”
The car worked even better on Sunday. “We got a lot better on Sunday,” says Brady. “We were able to qualify sixth, going out second to last, which is really tough there.”
After finishing fourth in his heat and the Dash, Brady was looking at a top five finish in the finale. “We were running really well,” he says. “We have a nice package going for Fremont. We were running fifth when we broke. It was just a bolt in the radius rod. I definitely have a lot more confidence this year. I spent last year figuring out what not to do a lot!”
Monday, the WoO visit the high banks of Lawrenceburg Speedway. Brady capitalized on the offer of driving the Fox #53. “I was excited to drive the Fox Brothers car,” he says. “They’ve had some recent success. It gives you a chance to figure out if you’re missing anything with your own stuff too.”
Brady timed in 19th quick. “We just missed the (heat) invert in qualifying,” he says. “We were able to make it through the heat. I was actually really good. We were running fifth and spun out trying to avoid (Kerry) Madsen who jumped the cushion. I was able to make it back to fifth and transfer.”
Brady charged from outside row ten in the main event. “We had a pretty good car in the feature,” he says. “We had gotten up to tenth or eleventh. There was a long run there, and we lost a couple spots trying find another palce to run on the racetrack. We ended up getting spun with four or five laps to go. We got back by a couple cars and ended up 16th. It felt good to be competitive with the Outlaws. The results just didn’t show it after missing qualifying a little bit and the spin.”
